Scientific

Posted on Fri Aug 13th, 2021 @ 3:11pm by Lieutenant Naomi McLaren & Lieutenant Commander Evelyn Rozia & Lieutenant Alexis Aenera

Mission: Pathstone to History
Location: Main Science

Alexis had gone and once again done what she could to get back to a sense of normalcy. The talk with the Captain had been... shaking, but perhaps things had come out better than she'd thought? She was still on the ship, she was still on duty and it wasn't as the senior science officer on board.

Still, she knew (officially) that she'd been in the wrong to go off on her own to try to decipher what had been happening, but if she'd had the rest around, they would have been pointing at things, asking what they meant, what she was doing, what did this shiny thing mean? What does THAT number mean? She'd have been distracted from discovering the fate of the star system they were in. It would have been taxing.

So she did what any other woman that was Alexis Aenera would do before she went back to the Science section: She freshened up and had a change of clothes. Back into the closet went the flats and back came the heels. THIS time, she made sure that wasn't going to show up looking less than the best she could and it took her a good twenty minutes to arrange herself just so and top off the pristine skirt and tunic with a white lab coat before she skipped out of her quarters and down past her personal lab to where the computer had assured her that Naomi was.

As she rounded the corners, the crisp clicks of her heels echoed through the hall and she approached the last known location of her new boss and she put on what she thought was a confident smile as she knocked on the door as she entered, "Naomi?" She asked, hopefully, glancing into the room.

Naomi was still getting used to the starship Astraea despite having been aboard for a short while. She heard the unexpected clicking while attempting to analyze star charts from the Vulara system where this mystery planet had appeared when she heard them.

Naomi didn't know anyone was getting closer to her until she heard her first name being used. She didn't immediately spin around when she heard her name either. "Yes, how can I help you?" She asked and then turned.

Naomi saw Lieutenant Aenara standing there, "Lieutenant." She added to the end of her question.

"Maaaay I come in?" Alexis asked, glancing around before pausing for a moment, "And please, call me Lexi, it's really sooo much easier to do that, I'm more an informal type myself and I like to think most people are friendly as well." She grimaced at what had to be the first impression Naomi had had when the Captain had dragged her into Astro as if on a leash.

"Sure," Naomi answered as she turned around. She proceeded to give Alexis her full and undivided attention, "So how can I help you Lieutenant?" She asked and frowned, "It's not something my toddler did is it?" She asked next, "Because she has a bad habit of causing mischief..."

Alexis looked around quickly, seeing if she'd missed seeing something or someone, "You have a child?" She asked, then shook her head, "Nope, nothing of the sort, just well, I kinda just talked to the Captain and she wanted me to come to you to help you with anything about the situation and well, I am after all an expert in astrophysics and other things and since you're now in charge, I knew I should also come introduce myself now that you're here." The whole thing was in one breath and rather rapid, but topped with another smile.

"Yes," Naomi answered, "Celeste is three. Being a single parent in Starfleet is a bit tough, but I'm managing the best I can." Naomi concluded and then focused on the next part of the conversation. "I'm not doing anything overly important other than analyzing the Vulara System. There's really nothing of significance in the system. Somehow the planetary system managed to adjust itself.

"That's after our mystery planet appeared in the system. Before that there was a large gap between Vulara Two and what is now Vulara Four. The habitable zone in the system has remained roughly the same size and it appears that there may have been an alien culture living on Vulara Four, however, I'm not sure if it's still there."

"I don't think it is..." Lexi snagged a chair without asking permission and plopped down in it as she glanced over the desk, "At least, when we were being held on the planet, the Dalacari said that it was on the edge of the habitable zone and Vulara Four, now, would be brought back to a far more tolerable area." She shrugged, "Could be interesting to see whether the culture there had space travel, but I'd think if they did, the Dalacari would know..."

"There haven't been any discernable traces of subspace signals from the fourth planet in the system. That doesn't necessarily eliminate the possibility, but it doesn't help the case either," Naomi pointed out.

"No, not really, could mean they all died off, maybe left their technology or didn't have it in the first place." Alexis shrugged, "Only way to really know is to go over there and look to find out?"

"Or," Naomi said, "We could try to scan the planet from our current location. I think the sensor array can be adjusted to give us a clearer picture, but that's more of an engineer's cup of tea than my own."

Lexi's automatic response was to bite her bottom lip. "I suppose so..." She admitted, but she was trying to actually GET there if she could, besides, "We could call down to engineering and ask um.... Alistair to come up to ask him?" She suggested, surely if they brought up the junior engineer, then she wouldn't have to see Evelyn's disappointment in her again.

Naomi hadn't really gotten to know too many of the others on the ship since her arrival. She'd been pretty well confined to various sections of the science department. "That would be better than breaking the sensors," She said.

With a nod, Alexis tapped her commander, “Aenera to engineering!”

=/\= Engineering here. =/\=

“Hi, yes, I’d like to have Lieutenant Fletcher come up to Science for a bit please? We need some help with the sensors and thought that we could use some expert help.”

=/\= I’m on my way, Lieutenant. Lieutenant Fletcher isn’t available, but I should be able to help a bit better than he could anyways. =/\= The voice had changed and it was one that Lexi wished it hadn’t been.

Unfortunately, as soon as the pronouncement was made, the comm cut off and Lexi’s eyes glanced towards the door almost as if to seek an escape. But that would mean violating the Captain’s orders, which she couldn’t do. Instead she sighed, “It looks like Commander Rosie intends on coming herself..” She said glumly, then tried a smile on, “She’s really good, too.”

"Well," Naomi said, "That's better than nothing." She answered. "And, at least we were able to get an engineering officer. They're probably all quite busy."

"Never busy enough..." Alexis grumbled, glancing towards the door before dismissing fleeing as an option.

A few minutes later, the door slid open and the Commander was there in all her engineering glory, uniform just so, but handing a PADD off to an NCO behind her who scurried off after receiving it. She gave a half-smile at Alexis, then a genuine smile to Naomi, "Right, you summoned, I am here, what can I help you ladies with?"

"Is there any way to improve the sensors in order to get a better image of this planetary system where our wayward planet appeared?" Naomi asked.

"Of course." Evelyn nodded, moving further in, "It's primarily a matter of redefining the parameters of the sensors. The way they're set by default is for general scanning, regardless of distance. If we set the mode for sensitivity and magnification, it'll greatly improve the resolution in the desired area, with the downside of blinders for everything else. We're in known territory at the moment, with the Dalacari and Ts'usugi on overwatch, so it's not a problem." Evelyn shrugged.

Naomi nodded, "I'm not quite sure what we'll find out about the planet, but I'm curious about how the system itself restructured itself so perhaps a scan of that too."

"Absolutely." Evelyn said with a smile, "I can have it all set up for you within the half hour, if that works for you?"

"That works brilliantly keep me updated." Naomi replied with a grin.
