Mission: Double Bind

OOC: Just putting up a placeholder. I might get to this later today but sprained my ankle and ended up in the ER last night so not sure. You can start it up if you wish.

The storm hit the forcefield with a massive blow that Will would have almost sworn caused the ground itself to shake. Even then, he couldn't help but wince. He looked over the readouts of the forcefield on the control panel and noted that, at least for the moment, the forcefield was holding.

"Be glad you're in here and not out there," Will commended. "Even without the freezing cold temperatures, you would not have enjoyed being hit by the high winds."

Linza had a shiver go down her spine, even though she was safe where she was. "I've been through some bad weather before but, this. How can a planet have this bad of weather?"

Checking the readouts herself, she couldn't help but frown. "Nothing could survive this without this type of shielding...nothing at all."

"Well, the exact scientific explanation would take a while as to how this specific weather got this bad," Will said, "but it is mind-boggling to think it was triggered by an asteroid that didn't even hit the planet. And no, nothing worth noting could survive out there on its own. That's why we're here trying to help.

"Yeah. I'm do out of touch with any Starfleet research, but at least that part I do remember. I made it all the way to Lieutenant Commander before I screwed up." Lin watched everything outside the shielding. "It can still boggle the mind, even if you know the science behind it. Science is one thing, experiencing it is another."

"Yeah, sometimes reality can be both far more fascinating and yet somehow far more frightening at the same time. It can make one think about just how small we are in the grand scheme of things." Will looked over and checked a couple of readouts, tapping in a few commands.

Linza nodded as she looked at her own readings. "I think I'll need a nice sunny beach on the holodeck after this. Nice and warm too. Even makes me realize how lucky I am to be in here and not out there, after all I've done."

"I might join you in the holodeck," Will said, glancing out beyond the forcefield and shuddering. "If I may ask, and mind you, you're under absolutely no obligation to answer if you don't want to, but do you want to talk about it? What happened in your time in Starfleet, I mean. As the Astraea's chief of operations, of course I'm in a position to have been able to look up your official personnel file, but I also know that never tells the whole story."

"Not the best story, but honestly, its better for people to know what not to do I suppose." Lin adjusted one thing and then looked over, "Let's see...Everything was good through the Academy, and hell, even up through when I landed a chief tactical position. But, got caught in a compromising position, given a warning. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander and changed ships. We were at standing yellow alert due to the patrol we were on. I was supposed to be on the bridge, as was the first office. Instead..." She bit her lip.

"We were tucked away in the weapons control room. We didn't pay attention to the controls we were accidentally hitting and the captain found us. Weapons were armed, red alert went off, the works. First officer and I got sent to command, I got demoted to Lieutenant and sent to basically the bad-officers ship. Same type of thing happened, this time I nearly caused a warp core explosion." She sighed, "I didn't have the right mind about me at that time for sure. Before they could lock me up I stole a shuttle and booked it out for where you all found me and saved me."

"Well, this is where I guess I'm supposed to say that we all make mistakes and how we should all learn from them," Will said. "Admittedly, I'm not the best at those kinds of conversations. Ironic, I suppose, coming from a single father and one-time Academy instructor. Part of why I went into operations management and not something like medical. My wife was always more of a people person, and always seemed to know just what to say."

Linza gave a small shrug. "It's okay. Honestly, just letting it out to someone who doesn't already know it from reading my record is kinda nice. It was years ago, and I'm not the same person. The captain is giving me a second chance, and I'm not going to give that up."

Will nodded. "For what it's worth, if you ever need help, I hope you know that you can turn to us for help if you ever need it."
