Sweet Dreams

Mission: Lower Decks

Captain Taggart laid down in his bed and stared at the ceiling, his final order that evening was to confirm the ship's heading to rendezvous with the Astrae and Captain Laurens. He was looking forward to seeing Abby again, he couldn't help smile and the thought of her made him think of a remote island, a gentle breeze and salty sea air. He rolled onto his side and looked at the picture of her on his desk. She was of course not in her uniform but in shorts and one of his t-shirts, her hair flowing freely in the breeze. With a smile on his face he fell asleep.

The soft music played in the background as he swayed gently to the soft beat, the scent of Abby’s hair filled the air as she nestled her head below his chin against his chest. His arms held her close as they danced on the beach under the stars.

Her arms were wrapped around him as she held him tightly, her head against his chest. She could hear his heart beating, her fingers rustling gently in the hair at the back of his neck. A smile formed on her lips as she shifted enough to look up at him, rising up on her tiptoes to brush a soft kiss across his lips before returning back to her former position in his arms. "Can we stay like this forever?" she murmured softly.

"I want to stay here," Dirk began to say as he looked down at Abby as things swirled around him, he barely held on to her at the end of his fingertips when they were in the passageway of the Astrae and the red alert alarm was flashing. "I'm not gonna let go of you," he whispered.

Abigail looked around, confused. She could feel his hand tightening around her fingers, holding tight, but the red alert lights and klaxons were distracting her. Weren't they just on the beach? Now the ship was demanding her again. Sigh sighed, leaning into him. "But I need to go," she whispered back, her voice barely audible over the sound despite their closeness. "The ship, my crew... it's my job..."

It was a pattern she recognised, it had happened so many times. They made plans to be together and ended up separated by their commitments to Starfleet. She took a step backward, looking around the corridor behind her once more until his hand tightened again, pulling her back into him.

As she turned back the red alert klaxons silenced and the strobing red was replaced by a deep red sunset as the sun dipped deeply on the horizon beyond the water.

He pulled her into him, her back against his chest, brushing her hair back and tucking it behind her ear before he leaned in and kissed her neck softly as they both lapsed into silence watching the sunset.

"It's beautiful," she murmured softly.

"One day this will be how we spend every evening Abby. This is what I want one day, sunsets together." Dirk enjoyed the feel of Abby against him as they watched the stars slowly appear.

"The moon is larger than I remember," he said peacefully then his comm badge blared, =/\=Captain, your presence is needed on the bridge=/\= the stars winked out and was replaced by the bridge of the Pennsylvania. He looked around in a panic, Abby was nowhere to be seen.

"It's the Astraea, Captain, a distress call they're under fire," Dirks pulse rose exponentially as he worried about Abby. As he thought of her the ship was rocked by an explosion. The explosion felt like a rocking boat.

He leaned on his elbow in his bed looking at Abby, "Don't you love sunrises on a boat at sea?"

"It's so peaceful," she murmured, looking up at him, her fingertips brushing the side of his face as she smiled. "A girl could definitely get used to this kind of life. Peace, quiet, no stress, just us..." she sighed softly.

"Captain to the bridge, incoming distress call." The voice came over the comms system.

Abigail closed her eyes for a moment before she looked up at him again.

"I guess that's my call," they both spoke simultaneously.

=/\= USS Astraea =/\=

Abigail sat up in bed, grinding the sleep out of her eyes. "Captain to the bridge, incoming distress call." The call came over the comms again. Her shoulders slumped slightly before she drew in a deep breath, steeling herself as she slid out of bed and reached for a uniform, tapping the commbadge that was laying on her bedside table. "I'm on my way."

=/\= USS Pennsylvania =/\=
Dirk woke up in a sweat as the dream faded away, he supposed it was brought on by the scheduled meeting with Astrae for parts. He only hoped they would be able to make time for each other.
