Analytic Anomalys

Posted on Sat May 30th, 2020 @ 6:39pm by Lieutenant Alexis Aenera

Mission: Into The Delta Triangle
Location: Science Lab 3
Timeline: During Senior Staff Meeting

Alexis settled herself in the chair behind her main console in her own personal, private science lab, number three. That talk with Valenna, and boy was it good to see her again, and even better to not have to worry about running the department anymore, had gone well, and with the Klingon scientist called to a senior staff meeting, it gave Alexis time to kick off her heels (which she proceeded to do) and do something she wanted.

"Computer, pull the survey records for unidentified anomalies found within the last thirty days." She said almost airily to the world, leaning back in the chair. A double beep pronounced the results, "Display results along with source and location."

She reached out and 'pulled' the first one towards her, using the 3-D display and expanded it. Found by USS Ulysses, off over there. Readings? High gravitational pull, oh... "Append tentative classification: Black hole with partner stellar mass, probably star in the five-Sol mass range." She expanded the image, "Lots of dust obscuring the location, recommend a request on any regional supernovae or solar winds that could affect the readings."

The next anomaly was brought forward, this one a flickering mass of what appeared to be lightning. Found by USS Bonhomme Richard even further away from their current location. The image could almost have been a transplanted section of the Charybdis Sectors plasma storms, but when the word section was said, it meant a lot smaller. She spent about ten minutes looking over the readings that the Richard had taken before it passed the thing by, not something that would have been easy in Charybdis, but the readings were different than what were found there. The ionizing radiation was decaying quickly, without the supplemental mass. "Append tentative classification: Interstellar Plasma Storm. From the readings the Bonhomme Richard provided, this anomaly will dissipate within five months. Recommend increased priority for this anomaly, but at a Blue rating only. Supplemental investigation to determine if the residue from the storm has any interesting properties."

Starfleet's Science Corps, especially the part that dealt with temporal and spatial anomalies, had a classification rating for how new anomalies should be investigated. Anything mundane was 'Gray', meaning it wasn't going anywhere and would probably not be very interesting and went through Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Red and up to Violet, meant for something that needed to be investigated NOW, RIGHT NOW. There were several scientists, Alexis included, who routinely went through the new items added to the database on a weekly basis, identifying what they could and giving the dedicated science vessels, such as ships Alexis had served on, a list of anomalies to investigate.

To someone who watched it and looked at the data, it could be boring, but for someone like Lexi, this was fascinating and even fun to look at. And in Alexis's eyes, critical. Since she was hunting a specific anomaly and would recognize it even if she were half blind.

Going through the list of seventeen anomalies took her over two hours with her appending notes to each of them as she did so. None of them were of any real true interest, the highest rating was a Yellow for what appeared to be the sighting of a transient microwormhole with an observed aperture of only fifty meters. Most likely by the time a ship got there, it would be gone, but hey, who knew?

Finally, Alexis brought the last one up and it caused her to sit up. The readings showed chronaton particles and the image was fuzzy, having been taken from nearly the edge of the range for the Venture-class USS Ulysses once again. Apparently this one was being approached when the ship had been called away to a distress call several star systems away. But it was a donut-shaped anomaly, one that looked familiar to the Betazoid. Now, there were several reasons it could look like that, but it still drew her attention. "Designate Anomaly Seventeen as a Red priority, approach with caution. Suspected temporal wormhole, recommend full shipboard team. Request experienced team and full report to be delivered to me."

She keyed her signature as she uploaded the file back to the main scientific database with her notes. Probably another of the scientists would look over the list and see her notes and even change things that she assumed if she'd made mistakes. She smiled as the file was confirmed as sent and leaned back, "Computer, Mozart, random." The room was filled with the sound of a piano as she closed her eyes for a moment, work had gotten done, so now she could take a break, just a short one, before getting to her next task: Planning a lesson on astrophysics for the next day. In fact... "Bring up that first anomaly again? I think I can use that..."
