Commanding officers in pairs

Posted on Thu Mar 4th, 2021 @ 4:32pm by Captain Abigail Laurens & Lieutenant Commander Evelyn Rozia & Lieutenant Mica Rue & Lieutenant Commander Calvin Morgan

Mission: Pathstone to History

Strolling the decks of the new Astraea after finishing with the chief, Mica had felt a little more accepted.

Ironic, considering the chief was new to the ship.

Still, she walked with a purpose now, albeit at a casual pace, and mused on how the new additions might just fill in the holes the original Astraea had contained and never suspected.

Turning a corner, she nodded to a passing officer she has seen before, then heard the chime.

“Lt Rue, report to the Captains ready room.”

She nodded to herself. :here we go...:

“LT Rue here, I’ll be there right away.”

It didn’t take long for Mica to get there, not when she had a pad handy in her pocket ready to show her the directions. It would have taken her hours if she had been forced to do it by instinct alone, this ship was so big. Shaking her head, she straightened her uniform top and pressed to chime.

"Enter," Abigail ordered, standing up behind her desk, her hands behind her back. She smiled as Mica entered, offering a nod and motioning toward one of the empty seats. "Lieutenant Rue, nice to see you again," she spoke politely. "I've asked Commander Morgan and Commander Rozia to join us, if you don't mind?"

Mica sat slowly. "Of course not, ma'am." Although she had a suspicion of what this was about, she was also treading that fine line in her head, where a meeting with the captain and superiors wasn't always the best thing. Still, she clamped off the weariness.

Evelyn was close enough behind that she figured that it wouldn't hurt to just walk in, triggering the door's sensor with a three-motion hand gesture that she knew she should have purged from the computer for the Captain's privacy, but arriving so close behind Mica... She grinned as she walked in the door, "You summoned, ma'am, I am come." Then she threw a glance over at Mica, "Hey Mica, how goes it?"

The Lt nodded at the chief.

Calvin walked in moments behind Evelyn. He was disheveled, only slightly worse than he usually looked though. Lab coat replacing uniform jacket, with the sleeves of the coat and uniform shirt pushed up to his elbows. He glanced about the room. "Captain," He said first before glancing at the other two. "Commander, Lieutenant," He added nodding to the other two. "Seems we have a party."

Abigail motioned for both Evelyn and Calvin to take seats before she sat herself. "This is not really a formal meeting, but I thought it would pay for the three of you to have a chat, regarding Lieutenant Rue's unique circumstances. Lieutenant, do you want to bring both Commander Morgan and Commander Rozia up to speed?"

Mica straightened in her seat. "Long story short? I was Chief Engineer on the old Astraea for a brief time, before putting my assignment on hold. I worked for the institute on Trill for a while, heading up a team that developed engineered medical devices, including the ones that were implanted on my own temples." she ducked her head, embarrassed. "When I decided to come back to starfleet I requested a change in assignment, to the new medical engineering department." Mica glanced at the Captain. "I suspect that's why you're both here."

"A peanut butter and jelly sandwich," Calvin replied, sitting in the chair, shifting slightly in his chair like he couldn't get comfortable.

"Well, I know that Mica already visited engineering and got a look at things." Evie flashed a smile at the Lieutenant, "We had a brief discussion about her situation. I've no doubt she'll make an excellent addition to both areas, none at all. In fact, ma'am, with her there are other additional unique opportunities that could be explored." She settled herself in her chair slightly, "I'm not sure on details... Yet. But I'm absolutely sure that they'll come up."

"It's an interface not thoroughly tested or researched by Starfleet. I'll be intrigued to assist her in whatever capacity medical can," Calvin added, a slightly more useful statement.

Mica nodded, thankful for the support.

"Medical Engineering is a rather new concept, especially onboard a ship," Abigail mused quietly before offering a smile to Mica. "That said, I imagine, given that your core focus had always been Engineering, that's likely where most of your duty will be here, with shifts in medical on an as needed basis. I don't imagine it will be too difficult to arrange, if you're all amenable to that?"

"I don't think that would be a problem in the slightest." Evelyn grinned, "It's not quite right next to Main Engineering, but I have a cybernetics lab that I think might be right up your alley, Mica. With just a little bit of adjustment, it could be turned into a hybrid type lab, if I'm gathering what you're looking for."

"Draw up the resources you'll need from medical, God knows I have enough staff now that can help," Calvin said, the last with a bit of sarcastic ire. "Not all of my labs have been assigned, so I can assign you space as well. There might be one near the cybernetics lab," he finished, contemplating the layout of the vessel.

"Fantastic, well, I'll let the three of you sort out who will be where and when, just let Commander Gunnison know once you've got a plan so he can make sure it's accounted in our systems. Now, if no one needs anything else from me, I have a mountain of paperwork I need to finish before we hit Pathstone." Abigail smiled, pleased that the conversation had been as easy as it had been.

Evelyn bounced up to her feet, "Sounds good, Skipper! Mica, want to come check out your new digs first, or go with the Doc to get people and stuff in order? I suppose it's up to you!"

The LT stood as well, happy at how the conversation had gone. She grinned at the chief. “If I can see the space then we can go from there, chief. And I appreciate your acceptance of this new role, you and the doctor both,” she nodded in Calvin’s direction.

Following Evelyn out, Mica Rue has the distinct impression that this was the start of, as the cliche went, a “beautiful relationship”.
