Unpacking a New Start

Mission: Into The Delta Triangle
Location: USS Astaea | Crew Quarters

{ON:}

Haru walked over to the replicator. “Cold water twist of lemon and twist of lime.”

The computer began to hum and within the confines of the small replicator unit a clear glass of liquid sparkled into existence. He picked it up and looked around.

The time to Unpack had come. Oddly enough Kaito loved unpacking. He loved the adventure of the fresh start and goodness knows he’d had plenty of them.

“Where to start,” he wondered out loud. There was a theory that had been around for eons that said pick a room and make it your own and then gently, respectfully do room by room honouring the history but also sweeping away negativity and making the room into something new and vibrant. He had never thought of that much until this time, this home an part of it had to do with his recent loss. It had hit him harder then his sister or his mother. They seemed to bare it better. Something felt different this time. Had he found his forever home? He hoped so.

Deciding to start in the bedroom, the one place he’d have to fully use and had used uncomfortably for the last few days, he headed there. He cleaned everything from top to bottom and stripped the sheets that came with the room. He put those off to the side for now knowing he'd pack them and send them off for storage. The mattress had been new so he simply unpacked the sheets he’d purchased and gently put them on the bed. He unfolded the blanket that he’d packed and put in the pillows he’d bought. Soon the bed was made. He scrubbed the closet then unpacked and hung his uniforms his casual clothing pants and shirts and arranged his shoes at the bottom. On top he stored extra pillows, sheet, blankets, and his bag packs.

Moving on he loaded the four drawer dresser with his underwear, undershirts, socks, and sleeping garments.

The night stand was simple enough. A picture of his mother and sister a drawer that held the latest book he was reading and a few other items he may need.

Finally the built in shelves that were against the long wall of the room. He filled those four shelves with books. When he was done two crates and his bag was empty. He stored those by the entrance door so that it could be taken and stored in one of the cargo areas when his unpacking was fully complete.

He then walked back to his room and looked around. He was happy with how things looked. The walls were a little bare but that would change over time.

Next he tackled the bathroom. He cleaned it from top to bottom and was delighted to find a shower that was both sonic and could be water. He laid a bathmat down as well as a spongy warm mat on the floor. He then filled the medicine cabinet with all he would need from teeth cleaning supplies, to shaving supplies, to a small med kit and a few items of choice.

The room had a small cabinet with two drawers and those drawers he filled it with towels and extra toiletries. The bathroom seemed to take the least amount of time.

Finally he turned to the living area happy that he finally had it as his own and that he didn’t have to share it.

Haru noticed the time and hurriedly ate a meal that was both breakfast and lunch. He hadn’t realized how hungry he was until he’d finished his second sandwich. Haru didn’t normally skip breakfast but he’d been so excited about unpacking that he’d forgotten all else.

Having consumed his meal he replicated a Vulcan spiced tea and proceeded to sip it while he cleaned the living and dinning area from top to bottom. When he was through his quarters were immaculate. All that was left was the last crate that held the items that would be distributed here. He was also happy to see that the crewman had delivered the small little three level bookshelf that stood waist high and which was to be a corner unit here in the living area by the small desk and computer that had been provided. The desk was small but the computer unit was positioned so he could use the space as a work station as well. Here is where he would write in his leather-bound journal. Rather then personal logs, which he seldom recorded, he preferred to write out his thoughts on paper. He’d replicated enough pens at home and enough new notebooks to store them in the bottom drawer of the desk. The top drawer held Padds that were empty and his current journal and pen.

The shelf he’d brought in would hold completed journals. He always filled ten, scanned them into Padds and then stored the actual journals at his house on Vulcan. The Padds he always kept with him so he could refer back to long forgotten entries and musings. He placed three Padds that were full on the shelf. He looked around pleased with the day’s work.

He had only a few more things to unpack. They were perhaps the most meaningful items that he had lovingly packed in his personal rucksack.

Kaito walked over to the sack and pulled out the first wrapped item. He untied the string that held the cloth in place and he gently unwrapped the small wood statue of Surak placing it on top of the small corner unit that would hold his finished journals. Beside it he placed a picture of Kirk and Pike along with Spock taken at the handover ceremony of the Enterprise a long time ago. A prize that was a gift from Ambassador Solvek whose life he’d saved. Beside that he pulled out the beads that had brought his mother years of comfort. He didn’t quite understand faith but it had been vital to his mother and still was. His grandmother, his father's mother, had also been a woman of faith but hers had been different from his mothers. He shook his head. He wouldn't think of his grandmother. He missed her so much.

He reached into his bag again and pulled out two small packages that he placed on the bottom shelf of the book unit. One was from his sister and one from his mother; gifts for his upcoming birthday. He’d save those and open them when he truly needed a boost rather then at his birthday. It was a way to feel like they were with him.

Finally he unwrapped the tea set that his grandmother had left him and the two wood boxes that held several kinds of tea bags. He put those on the glass dining table for his evening ritual.

Finally all was done.

When he looked at the clock it was already 2200 hours. He showered dressed for bed and went to sleep. Tomorrow would be another big day; his medical check in along with the meeting of his TACT/SEC CO.
